Turmeric Powder
Select sizeThe plant
Turmeric is the underground stem of a ginger-family plant, dried or used fresh.
What's in it
Curcuminoids are the yellow-orange plant pigments, including curcumin. Aromatic oils also contribute to its flavour.
Curcuminoids
Curcumin and two relatives. Around three per cent of the dried rhizome.
Turmerone
The dominant volatile in the aromatic oil.
Starch
The bulk of the rhizome by weight.
Zingiberene
Shared with ginger, from the same family.
How it works
Digestive tradition: Turmeric is traditionally used for a comfortable feeling after meals, especially when digestion feels full or sluggish. Golden food variety: Its natural pigments bring colour and flavour to meals. In herbal practice, it has a broader history in wellbeing and skin-care preparations.
In the tradition
Used in South Asian food, Ayurveda and many household traditions.
