Turmeric Soap
Select sizeThe plant
Made by the traditional slow method from organic and wildcrafted plant oils and butters, with turmeric stirred in at trace to give a deep yellow-orange bar, then cured for four to six weeks. The colour softens over the life of the bar as the turmeric fades in the light.
What's in it
Turmeric, plant oils and butters, and wildcrafted botanicals. The colour is the turmeric — there is no added dye, no synthetic fragrance, no preservative and no detergent.
Curcuminoids
The pigment from the turmeric. Light-sensitive, so bars fade over time.
Plant oils and butters
The body of the bar.
Glycerin
Formed as the soap sets and left in rather than stripped out.
Superfat
A little oil left over at the end, for conditioning.
How it works
Curcumin, the pigment in turmeric, is a strong dye and a fugitive one at the same time: it stains readily but fades quickly under light, which is why a turmeric bar is vivid when new and noticeably paler after a few months on a shelf. That is normal and not a fault. The staining is real too — the bar will mark a pale flannel, and on very fair skin it can leave a faint temporary tint that rinses off.
In the tradition
Turmeric has been used on skin across South Asia for centuries, notably in pre-wedding haldi ceremonies where a paste is applied to the skin.
A strong dye and a poor one at the same time.
