The plant

Encapsulated milled rhizome or curcuminoid extract of Curcuma longa. Standard extracts are specified at ninety-five per cent curcuminoids; plain milled rhizome is only around three per cent, so the two are very different products at similar shelf prices.

What's in it

Curcumin's problem is absorption, and every serious formulation addresses it somehow.

Curcuminoids

Curcumin and relatives. Around 3% of raw rhizome, 95% of standard extract.

Piperine

From black pepper. Slows curcumin's breakdown considerably.

Phospholipid and micellar forms

Alternative delivery approaches to the same problem.

Turmerone

The volatile fraction, present in whole-root products.

How it works

Curcumin is barely water-soluble, poorly absorbed and quickly cleared by the liver, and honest suppliers say so. Piperine inhibits the enzymes that clear it, which is why turmeric and black pepper are ground together across South Asian cooking and why most capsules include a small amount of pepper extract. A turmeric capsule with neither pepper nor a delivery technology is mostly an expensive way to buy a spice.

In the tradition

Central to Indian cooking and Ayurveda, where golden milk — turmeric simmered in milk with pepper and ghee — is the traditional preparation rather than a recent one.

Neither pepper nor a delivery technology means an expensive way to buy a spice.

How to use
  1. 1Take 1–2 capsules daily with food and a full glass of water.
  2. 2Do not exceed the amount stated on the pack.
Suitability
  • Speak to your doctor before use if you take anticoagulant medication or have gallstones.
  • Piperine affects how several medicines are metabolised — check if you take prescribed drugs.
  • Not suitable in high doses during pregnancy.
  • May worsen reflux in some people.

A food supplement, not a substitute for a varied diet. Speak to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.
