The plant

Moringa is a tropical tree with clusters of small leaflets. Its edible leaves are dried for use in foods and herbal preparations.

What's in it

The leaf contains protein, fibre and naturally occurring vitamins and minerals. Chlorophyll is its green pigment; nutrient amounts vary by serving and processing.

Isothiocyanates

Including moringin. The same compound class as mustard and horseradish.

Vitamin C and vitamin A

Present in the dried leaf in useful amounts.

Calcium and iron

Concentrated by drying.

Quercetin and chlorogenic acid

Polyphenols, abundant in the leaf.

How it works

Food nourishment: Protein supplies building blocks for body tissues, while fibre contributes to the diet. Whole-leaf use: Eating the leaf or its powder includes more of the plant material than straining a tea. This makes moringa a versatile green ingredient for food-based wellbeing routines.

In the tradition

A familiar food in parts of Africa and South Asia.

A single moringa leaf is made up of many small leaflets.

How to use
  1. 1Stir 1–2 tsp moringa powder into a smoothie, juice or food.
  2. 2Take once daily.
  3. 3Green and slightly peppery.

Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Best used within 6–12 months to preserve nutritional potency.

Suitability
  • Use the intended leaf product.
  • Check pregnancy, breastfeeding and medicines; roots and bark have different safety profiles.
  • On thyroid medication: may affect thyroid function.
  • On diabetes medication: may lower blood sugar; monitor closely.
  • On blood thinners: high vitamin K content; check with your doctor.

A food supplement, not a substitute for a varied diet. Speak to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.
