The plant

Barberry is a thorny shrub with small yellow flowers and bright red berries. The root and root bark are naturally golden yellow and are the parts traditionally used in stronger herbal preparations.

What's in it

Berberine is a naturally yellow, bitter substance in barberry root. It is an alkaloid—a type of plant chemical that can have effects in the body. It gives the root its characteristic golden-yellow colour and strong bitter taste.

Berberine

The dominant alkaloid. Yellow, bitter, and increasingly studied.

Berbamine

A bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid, more specific to Berberis.

Oxyacanthine

Another characteristic alkaloid of the genus.

Organic acids

In the berry rather than the root — the source of its sharpness.

How it works

Bitter digestive tradition: Barberry root is traditionally used in measured digestive preparations, especially those built around bitter herbs. Where the experience begins: Bitter compounds activate taste receptors in the mouth—the tiny sensors that recognise flavour. Herbal traditions use this distinctive bitter taste as part of preparations taken around meals. Traditional herbal role: Barberry is valued as a strong bitter root in digestive and liver-focused formulas. Here, liver-focused describes its historical use in herbal practice.

In the tradition

Barberry has been used in traditional European, Persian and other regional herbal systems, especially where a strong bitter root was called for.

Berberine is so strongly coloured that freshly cut barberry root can look as though it has been dyed bright yellow.
