Charcoal Soap
Select sizeThe plant
Made by the traditional slow method from organic and wildcrafted plant oils and butters, with finely milled activated charcoal stirred in at trace to give a matte black bar, then cured for four to six weeks. The charcoal is milled fine enough that it does not act as a scrub.
What's in it
Activated charcoal, plant oils and butters, and wildcrafted botanicals. The colour is the charcoal — there is no added dye, no synthetic fragrance, no preservative and no detergent.
Activated carbon
Heated until its pore structure opens. The source of the colour.
Surface area
A single gram can exceed a thousand square metres of internal surface.
Plant oils and butters
The body of the bar.
Glycerin
Formed as the soap sets and left in rather than stripped out.
How it works
Activation means heating carbon until it is riddled with microscopic pores, which gives it an extraordinary internal surface area — a single gram can exceed a thousand square metres. That surface holds onto molecules, which is why activated charcoal is used in water filtration. In a soap bar, though, contact with the skin lasts a few seconds and most of that surface is already occupied by the soap itself, so take it as a natural colourant with a mild character of its own rather than a deep cleanser.
In the tradition
Activated charcoal has been used in filtration since the nineteenth century; its use as a soap ingredient is recent.
