Aloe Soap
Select sizeThe plant
Made by the traditional slow method from organic and wildcrafted plant oils and butters, with aloe vera gel used in place of much of the water, then cured for four to six weeks. The gel is the clear inner leaf fillet, not the whole leaf.
What's in it
Aloe vera inner-leaf gel, plant oils and butters, and wildcrafted botanicals. No synthetic detergents, no synthetic fragrance, no preservatives and no added colour.
Inner leaf gel
Mucilaginous polysaccharides, mainly acemannan. The part used.
Aloin
A bitter compound in the layer beneath the rind. Not in filleted inner-leaf gel.
Plant oils and butters
The body of the bar.
Glycerin
Formed as the soap sets and left in rather than stripped out.
How it works
Cut an aloe leaf and two things emerge: clear gel from the centre, and a bitter yellow latex from just under the skin. Only the clear inner gel goes into this bar. That is the fraction aloe has been valued for, and keeping the two apart is the reason aloe products differ from one another so much.
In the tradition
Aloe has been used on skin around the Mediterranean, Arabian peninsula and North Africa for millennia, and appears in Egyptian and Greek records.
Two things emerge, and only one belongs here.
