The plant

Valerian is a flowering plant whose roots and underground stems are dried for herbal preparations.

What's in it

Valerenic acids are characteristic plant compounds. Aromatic substances give the dried root its strong smell.

Isovaleric acid

The source of the smell. Forms as the root dries.

Valerenic acid

The marker compound used for standardisation.

Valepotriates

Unstable iridoids that break down during drying and storage.

Volatile oil

Around one per cent, carrying bornyl acetate.

How it works

Settling for rest: Valerian has traditionally been used for mild nervous tension and sleep support. Everyday meaning: Tension can leave the body feeling keyed up at bedtime. Valerian’s traditional place is in preparations intended to help the transition towards rest.

In the tradition

A longstanding European root used in evening formulas.

The dried root smells much stronger than the delicate flowers suggest.

How to use
  1. 1Simmer 1–2 tsp dried valerian root in 250ml water for 10–15 mins.
  2. 2Drink 1 cup 30–60 mins before bed.
  3. 3Distinctively earthy, pungent, musky flavour — add honey to balance.
  4. 4Effects are cumulative: best results after 2–4 weeks of consistent nightly use.
  5. 5Pairs beautifully with passionflower, hops, or lemon balm for sleep blends.

Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. The characteristic smell intensifies with age — this is normal. Best used within 12–24 months.

Suitability
  • Can cause drowsiness; avoid driving if affected and combining with alcohol or sedatives.
  • Check pregnancy, breastfeeding and medicines.
  • On hepatically metabolised medication: may affect CYP3A4; check with your doctor.
  • Pre-surgery: discontinue 2 weeks before; may interact with anaesthesia.
  • Driving or operating machinery: sedating; do not drive after use.

A food supplement, not a substitute for a varied diet. Speak to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.
