The plant

American skullcap is a mint-family plant with small blue flowers. Its above-ground parts are used traditionally.

What's in it

Flavonoids are naturally occurring plant compounds. The herb also contains bitter constituents that shape its taste.

Baicalin

A flavone glycoside. The principal marker compound.

Baicalein

The aglycone form, released by gut bacteria.

Scutellarin

Named for the genus.

Wogonin

Another characteristic flavone.

How it works

Nervous-system tradition: Skullcap is traditionally used for restlessness and mild tension. Plain meaning: The nervous system carries messages between the brain and the body. A nervine is a traditional herb associated with calm and nervous wellbeing, which explains skullcap’s place in evening blends.

In the tradition

Used in North American herbal practice.

The flower’s hood-like shape helped give the plant its name.
