The plant

The leaf of the raspberry cane is dried for herbal infusions. It is separate from the sweet fruit.

What's in it

Tannins give a lightly drying mouthfeel. Flavonoids are natural plant compounds also found in many other leaves.

Tannins

Both hydrolysable and condensed. The astringency and the tea-like taste.

Fragarine

An alkaloid found in the leaf, not the fruit.

Flavonoids

Including quercetin and kaempferol glycosides.

Minerals

Calcium, magnesium and manganese in useful amounts.

How it works

Women’s tradition: Raspberry leaf is associated with menstrual wellbeing in herbal practice. Astringent character: Astringent means a lightly tightening or drying quality. Its tannins explain this familiar feel in the mouth and form part of its traditional herbal character.

In the tradition

A longstanding European women’s herb.

Raspberry leaf tea tastes leafy rather than like raspberry fruit.
