The plant

Dong quai is the dried root of Angelica sinensis, a flowering member of the parsley family.

What's in it

Ferulic acid and ligustilide are natural compounds in the root. Ligustilide contributes to its characteristic aromatic oil.

Ligustilide

The principal volatile, and the source of the celery smell.

How it works

Women’s tradition: Dong quai is used in Chinese herbal formulas for menstrual wellbeing. Menstrual wellbeing refers to comfort and wellbeing around the monthly cycle. Traditional nourishment: Chinese herbalists describe it as a blood-nourishing herb. This is a traditional description of its role, used within a wider assessment and personalised formula.

How to use
  1. 1Simmer 1–2 tsp dong quai root in 500ml water for 15–20 mins.
  2. 2Drink 1 cup daily.
  3. 3Sweet, warming and celery-like.
