Cacao Powder
Select sizeThe plant
Cacao powder comes from processed seeds of the cacao tree. Some fat is removed during powder production.
What's in it
Theobromine is a natural compound related to caffeine. Cacao also contains fibre and polyphenols—plant compounds that contribute to its character.
Theobromine
The principal stimulant. Milder and longer-acting than caffeine.
Caffeine
Present, but at far lower levels than theobromine.
Flavanols
Epicatechin and procyanidins. Reduced by heavy processing.
Phenylethylamine
Present in small amounts.
How it works
Food enjoyment: Cacao brings a strong chocolate flavour to drinks and recipes. Natural stimulation: Its caffeine and theobromine can contribute to a more alert feeling. The amount depends on the serving and processing.
In the tradition
Rooted in American cacao food and drink traditions.
Cacao seeds develop inside large pods growing from the tree.
