The plant

Spearmint is an aromatic herb with pointed green leaves used in food and infusions.

What's in it

Carvone is a major fragrance compound in spearmint. It gives a different mint character from the stronger menthol taste of peppermint.

R-carvone

The spearmint note. The mirror image of caraway's S-carvone.

Limonene

The citrus lift.

Menthol

Essentially absent — this is the key difference from peppermint.

Rosmarinic acid

The mint-family polyphenol.

How it works

After-meal tradition: Spearmint is traditionally enjoyed for mild wind and digestive comfort. Fresh flavour: Its aromatic oils are released as the leaves steep, creating a gently minty drink. This makes it a popular choice for a refreshing food and herbal routine.

In the tradition

Used across Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and wider food traditions.

Spearmint is one of the parent plants of peppermint.

How to use
  1. 1Steep 1–2 tsp dried spearmint in 250ml hot water for 5–10 mins.
  2. 2Drink 2 cups daily for hormonal benefits.
  3. 3Refreshingly sweet, clean mint flavour — gentler than peppermint.
  4. 4Excellent hot or iced.
  5. 5Pairs well with lemon balm for digestive blends, or lady’s mantle for women’s hormonal support.

Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Best used within 12–18 months to preserve carvone content.

Suitability
  • Check concentrated use during pregnancy, breastfeeding or alongside medicines; stop if it aggravates reflux.
  • Low testosterone (men or women): anti-androgenic; avoid in deficiency.
  • On hormone therapy: check with your doctor.

A food supplement, not a substitute for a varied diet. Speak to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.
