The plant

Rosemary is an evergreen shrub with narrow, needle-like leaves used fresh or dried.

What's in it

Rosmarinic acid is a natural plant compound. Cineole and other aromatic substances contribute to the leaf’s strong fragrance.

Cineole

The eucalyptus note. Dominant in many chemotypes.

Camphor

The sharp cooling edge, and the reason for the cautions.

Carnosic acid

A potent antioxidant diterpene, concentrated in the leaf.

Rosmarinic acid

Named for the plant, though found across the mint family.

How it works

After-meal tradition: Rosemary is traditionally used for digestive fullness and wind. Refreshing aroma: Its scent is released when the leaf is crushed or infused. This brings a clear, resinous character to a warming drink and helps explain its enduring appeal in household herbal routines.

In the tradition

A Mediterranean food herb also traditionally associated with remembrance.

Its narrow leaves remain green through the seasons.
