The plant

Medicinal rhubarb uses the dried underground parts of Rheum officinale and related specified species.

What's in it

Hydroxyanthracene compounds are natural substances with laxative effects. Tannins are another group of compounds in the root.

How it works

Bowel action: Active compounds encourage the large bowel’s muscular movement, helping stool move along. Water balance: They also help keep more water in the bowel contents, making passage easier. This explains the root’s use in measured preparations for occasional constipation.

In the tradition

Used in Chinese and European medicinal traditions.

The medicinal root is a different product from culinary rhubarb stalks.
