The plant

Peppermint is a hybrid mint with strongly scented leaves used fresh or dried.

What's in it

Menthol produces its characteristic cooling sensation. Menthone is another fragrant compound in the leaf’s oil.

Menthol

Up to half the volatile oil. The cooling sensation.

Menthone

The sharper, less sweet note underneath.

Menthyl acetate

Fruity and soft, higher in well-grown leaf.

Rosmarinic acid

The mint-family polyphenol.

How it works

After-meal comfort: Peppermint leaf is traditionally used for fullness and wind. Cooling feel: Menthol activates cold-sensitive receptors—tiny sensors on nerve endings—creating a cool sensation in the mouth. Its fresh flavour makes an infusion a familiar finish to a meal.

In the tradition

A longstanding European and Mediterranean digestive herb.

Peppermint is a natural cross between water mint and spearmint.

How to use
  1. 1Steep 1–2 tsp dried peppermint in 250ml hot water for 5–10 mins, covered.
  2. 2Drink after meals for digestion, or as needed.
  3. 3Refreshingly cool, minty flavour — naturally caffeine-free and delicious hot or iced.
  4. 4Pairs well with fennel or ginger for digestive blends, or alone as a daily refresher.

Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Best used within 12–18 months to preserve menthol content.

Suitability
  • May worsen reflux.
  • Check gallbladder problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding and medicines; leaf tea and essential oil are different.
  • Infants & young children: avoid menthol near the face; can cause breathing difficulties.
  • On cyclosporine or certain medications: may affect absorption.

A food supplement, not a substitute for a varied diet. Speak to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.
