The plant

Oregano is a small mint-family herb whose leaves release a strong scent when rubbed.

What's in it

Carvacrol and thymol are aromatic compounds in some oregano varieties. Their proportions vary and help shape its pungent flavour.

Carvacrol

The dominant phenol. Sharp, hot and antiseptic.

Thymol

Carvacrol's isomer — the compound named for thyme.

Para-cymene

The precursor from which both are formed in the plant.

Rosmarinic acid

The mint-family polyphenol, abundant here.

How it works

Digestive tradition: Oregano is traditionally enjoyed in aromatic preparations around meals. Sensory warmth: Crushing or steeping the leaf releases fragrance into the food or drink. Its bold character makes it a useful partner for milder herbs in warming blends.

In the tradition

A familiar Mediterranean food herb with broader household herbal use.

Its aromatic strength becomes obvious when a leaf is rubbed between the fingers.

Suitability
  • Concentrated oil is different from the leaf.
  • Check medicinal use during pregnancy, breastfeeding or alongside medicines.
  • On blood thinners: carvacrol has anticoagulant properties.
  • On diabetes medication: may lower blood sugar.
  • Oregano/Lamiaceae family allergy: possible cross-reactivity.

A food supplement, not a substitute for a varied diet. Speak to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.
