The plant

Mullein forms a rosette of velvety leaves and sends up a tall yellow flower spike.

What's in it

Mucilage is a water-loving, gel-like plant material. Saponins are naturally occurring compounds that can produce a light foam in water.

Mucilage

Polysaccharides that swell in water. The soft, coating quality.

Saponins

Surfactants — they lower surface tension and thin secretions.

Iridoid glycosides

Including aucubin, giving a mild bitterness.

Flavonoids

Including verbascoside, named for the genus.

How it works

Throat tradition: Mullein is traditionally used in soothing respiratory blends. Its mucilage helps explain the herb’s association with a comforting, coating quality. Herbal language: Respiratory refers to breathing and the airways. Mullein’s long use in this area makes it a familiar ingredient in seasonal herbal routines.

In the tradition

A longstanding European herb also used in modern Caribbean-influenced blends.

The leaves feel velvety because of their fine covering of hairs.

How to use
  1. 1Steep 1–2 tsp dried mullein leaf in 250ml hot water for 10–15 mins.
  2. 2Strain through a fine cloth or coffee filter — the leaf hairs irritate the throat if left in.
  3. 3Drink 1–3 cups daily.
  4. 4Mild and faintly sweet.
Suitability
  • Strain leaf tea through a fine filter to remove irritating hairs.
  • Check pregnancy, breastfeeding and medicines.
  • Persistent breathing symptoms need assessment.

A food supplement, not a substitute for a varied diet. Speak to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.
