The plant

Marshmallow is a pale-flowered plant of damp ground. Its dried root is used in herbal drinks.

What's in it

Mucilage is the slippery, gel-like material produced when the root meets water. It is made from long chains of natural sugar units.

Mucilage polysaccharides

Up to a third of the dried root. The defining component.

Pectin

Contributing to the gel-forming behaviour.

Starch

A large share of the remaining dry weight.

Flavonoids

Present in small amounts.

How it works

Soothing contact: The root’s mucilage forms a soft coating when mixed with water. This helps explain its traditional use for an irritated mouth or throat and associated dry cough. Digestive comfort: Herbalists also use it for mild stomach discomfort. Demulcent is the herbal word for this soothing, coating quality.

In the tradition

A longstanding European soothing herb.

The original marshmallow confection was associated with this plant.

Suitability
  • Separate from oral medicines because absorption may be delayed; check an appropriate interval with a pharmacist.
  • Check pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • On oral medication: mucilage may slow absorption; take 1–2 hours apart.
  • Diabetes: may lower blood sugar; monitor if diabetic.

A food supplement, not a substitute for a varied diet. Speak to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.
