The plant

Hops are the papery female flower clusters of a climbing plant. They are also used in brewing.

What's in it

Humulone and lupulone are natural bitter compounds. Aromatic oils contribute to the familiar resinous scent.

Lupulin

The yellow resinous powder in the cone. Everything else is in here.

Alpha acids

Humulone and relatives. The source of bitterness.

Beta acids

Lupulone and relatives. Contribute aroma and preservation.

Myrcene and humulene

The volatile aromatics, lost quickly with age.

How it works

Evening relaxation: Hops are traditionally used for mild mental tension and to help settle into a bedtime routine. Body context: Wind-down routines give the body time to move from daytime alertness towards rest. Hops have a longstanding place in herbal blends used for this purpose.

In the tradition

Used in European brewing and evening herbal preparations.

The papery hop cone is a cluster of female flowers.

How to use
  1. 1Steep 1–2 tsp dried hops in 250ml hot water for 5–10 mins.
  2. 2Drink 1 cup 30–60 mins before bed.
  3. 3Bitter, earthy, slightly floral flavour — pairs well with valerian, passionflower, or chamomile for sleep blends.
  4. 4Can also be used in a sleep pillow (sachets placed near the head).

Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place — hops degrade quickly with light and heat. Best used within 6–12 months for peak sedative potency.
