The plant

Chaga forms a dark, irregular growth, often on birch trees in cold regions. Its rusty-brown interior is prepared for drinks.

What's in it

Beta-glucans are complex carbohydrates in fungal cell walls. Chaga also contains dark pigments and polyphenols—naturally occurring compounds with antioxidant activity in laboratory tests.

Betulinic acid

Derived from birch bark betulin. Only present in birch-grown chaga.

Beta-glucans

Fungal cell wall polysaccharides. Water-soluble with heat.

Melanin

The black exterior. Unusually high.

Oxalates

Present in significant amounts — the reason for the kidney caution.

How it works

Traditional wellbeing: Chaga has a history as a restorative drink in northern herbal traditions. Restorative describes its traditional place in routines for general vitality. A warming ritual: Its earthy flavour offers a distinctive alternative to familiar herbal infusions, bringing a forest ingredient into a quiet daily moment.

In the tradition

Associated with Siberian, Russian and northern European traditional use.

Its black outside and brown interior look very different from a typical cap-and-stem mushroom.
