Cascara Sagrada Bark
Rhamnus purshiana
Select sizeThe plant
Cascara comes from a North American tree. Properly aged or processed bark is used in medicinal preparations.
What's in it
Cascarosides are compounds that become active in the large bowel. They belong to a group of plant substances with laxative effects.
How it works
Bowel movement: Cascara stimulates the muscular movement that pushes stool through the large bowel. Softer passage: It also changes how the bowel handles water and salts, helping keep more water in the stool. Together, these actions explain its use for occasional constipation.
In the tradition
A North American bark later adopted into Western herbal medicine.
