The plant

Astragalus is a flowering member of the pea family. Its long yellow root is dried in slices and is the part used in herbal teas, broths and formulas.

What's in it

Polysaccharides are long chains of sugar units naturally found in plants; here they are plant compounds, not added sugar. Astragalosides are another group of compounds in the root. Flavonoids are plant substances also found in many fruits and vegetables.

Polysaccharides

Long-chain sugars, water-soluble. The reason it is simmered rather than steeped.

Astragalosides

Triterpene saponins. Astragaloside IV is the marker used for grading.

Isoflavones

Including formononetin, common across the pea family.

Amino acids

Present in the free form, contributing the faintly sweet taste.

How it works

Steady vitality: Astragalus is traditionally used in Chinese herbal practice as a building tonic—a herb chosen to support strength and resilience over time. Seasonal wellbeing: Its traditional reputation includes supporting the body’s defences. The immune system is the network of cells and tissues that helps the body respond to infections. Traditional nourishment: Often simmered in broths and herbal blends, the root has a longstanding place in routines intended to help people feel nourished and resilient.

In the tradition

Known as Huang Qi in Chinese herbal tradition, astragalus has been used for centuries in strengthening formulas for energy, resilience and seasonal support.

The name Huang Qi is often understood as “yellow leader,” referring to the colour of the root and its high standing among tonic herbs.
